Rental Cars and Damage

One of the most difficult issues with renting a car is dealing with damage, both pre-existing and new. At Melbourne Car Rental we believe in having an open and accountable process for this.

While we have to manage this problem so that costs are recovered, we do not want our customers to be unfairly treated. For your protection we take a video of all cars before they go out. We also provide you with a written damage report that is your responsibility to use to note any damage to your rental car before you leave. We encourage you to take your own photos and video when picking up and dropping off the vehicle. In fact the ACCC recommends this.

In the event of an accident or damage to your rental vehicle, your chosen excess will be charged to your credit card as well as an accident administration fee of $110 and charges for days off the road while the vehicle is being repaired.

In the event of minor damage to your vehicle you have the option to keep renting the vehicle and have the damage repaired yourself by a reputable and qualified repairer. Please note that a staff member must inspect the damage prior to it being repaired and an accident report form must be filled in.

If you wish us to review any decision about damage to a vehicle, please put your claims in writing and email to us. If you are still unsatisfied with our decision contact Consumer Affairs Victoria for advice.

Can I rent a car with someone else’s credit card?

Yes, as long as the credit card holder is the hirer of the vehicle and is present when the vehicle is picked up. You can then be added as an additional driver.

Are your vehicles allowed to travel interstate?

Yes, we offer interstate rates for interstate travel to SA, NSW, ACT, TAS, QLD. One way rentals (min 5-7 day rentals) are available to Adelaide, Bryon Bay, Sydney, Brisbane & Gold Coast.

Are there any Hidden Fees?

There are no hidden fees in every quote we give. There are options on reduction waivers if you choose. The quoted price is the price.

Do you offer unlimited kilometres?

Yes we offer unlimited kilometre rates within Victoria and interstate. We also have reduced rates for 100klm's and 200klm's free per day for budget travel. We have special 1 day hire rates with 100klms free per day and 200 klm's free per day.

Do you offer Roadside Assist?

Yes all vehicles have roadside assist.

Do you offer Reduction Waivers for Single Vehicle Accident Cover?

Standard Liability is $3300 MVA (multi vehicle accident) plus $3300 SVA (single vehicle accident) Surcharges apply for under 25 year old drivers and P Platers. We offer excess reduction packages which vary depending on your age and which vehicle you choose. Our excess packages are discounted when you book a car for more than 14 days. Are the Electronic Toll Roads in Melbourne Difficult to Understand?

The Toll roads in Melbourne are well signed and usually have the word E Tag on them. Melbourne Car Rental has an E Tag in all of its rental cars and all toll fees are automatically charged to your credit card. Full information about this service is included in your confirmation email and in your rental agreement.

How does your Airport Service work?

We have 10 years of experience with providing a Melbourne Airport Car Rental Service. We guarantee 100% reliability and speed of service 24 hours a day for pre-booked rentals. Once your booking has been confirmed we send you an email confirmation which has all your airport collection information carefully explained. The Airport Shuttle bus will collect and deliver you to your car within 10-15 minutes. This service is very streamlined and hassle free. You return our hire vehicle back to our airport car rental service at the end of your rental and a shuttle bus will transport you back to the Airport terminal of your choice. Complimentary Road Directories, with CityLink & Eastlink Tollways Information are placed in every vehicle we rent from the airport. We can provide written travel information about lots of area's in Victoria you may want to visit and can suggest some you haven't thought of. GPS's are also available.

Are all your fleet new and fully maintained?

All our fleet vehicles are fully maintained and are aged between 0 and 8 years with full service records and RWC. We are constantly upgrading our fleet and have a good supply of brand new (less than 6 months) eco friendly vehicles at all times. Our later model vehicle categories offer fantastic rental rates and great value.

Which driver’s licences do you accept?

We accept most Nationality driver’s licences in English. Non English driver’s licences will require either a translation document stamped or an International Drivers Licence. We do not offer an airport service for drivers over 75 years. Drivers over 75 years must attend city office for all inquiries. We accept Malayasian, Chinese (with International Licence), Indonesian, Singaporean, Hong Kong, Thailand, New Zealand, UK, USA, South African, and most European drivers licences. . Min age required is 21 years with 2 years driving experience. Under 25 year old drivers and those using P plates are subject to surcharges. Email us with any further enquiries you have about this.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

The following Cancellation fees apply. Greater than 7 days – no charge, within 7 days - $50 charge, within 4 days $100 charge, Within 48 hours – deposit forfeited – full rental fees apply. If booked for pick up during Peak Season Dec 01 - Jan 31, Grand Prix weekend, Motor GP weekend, Public Holidays and Easter, we may ask for the full amount to be paid at time of booking confirmation. No refunds for cancellations during those peak periods will be given. You can defer your booking for up to 3 months if you have a change of schedule within 7 days from the collection date (This does not apply during Peak Seasons of Xmas & Easter).
