It is compulsory in Victoria for babies and children up to 8 years old to use a child seat or booster seat. Renting a car with a child under 4 years old means they must travel in a rear facing or forward facing child restraint. The size of the child also determines the type of seat used. Children aged under 6 months must use a rear facing child restraint. Children aged 6 months to under 4 years must use either a rear facing child restraint or a forward facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness.
Children aged 4 years to less than 7 years must use either a forward facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness or a booster seat. Children grow at different rates and there can be big differences in their heights and weights. Therefore you can choose the type of restraint that is best for your child’s size.
Even if your child is 4 years old they may not be ready to travel in a booster seat. Vicroads recommend you keep your child in their forward facing restraint with an inbuilt harness until they are too big for it and then move to a booster seat.
Baby Seats
Melbourne Car Rental regularly updates its stock of babyseats and we currently are using the Infasecure Cosi Compact as our baby seats for hire. Daily rates start at $7.70 and are capped at $49 per rental. These baby seats are convertible and are able to be used in a rearward or forward facing position
Booster Seats
Melbourne Car Rental is currently stocking the Infasecure Vesatile Folding Booster for its booster seats for hire in Melbourne. Daily rates start at $7.70 per booster seat and are capped at $49 per rental.
We recommend hiring a midsize or larger car if you want to use a baby seat or booster for ease of access and to also give you the necessary luggage space that is usually required when kids are in tow. The correct baby seat choice is ultimately the responsibility of the accompanying adult to determine so please got to the Vicroads website if you require any further information about which child seat is right for your child. It is also the responsibility of the accompanying adult to ensure the seat is fitted correctly.
